Description
Summary:Esophageal surgery is still the most challenging branch of general surgery. Its possibilities have been significantly enlarged within the last two decades. In the treatment of benign or functional diseases, the minimal invasive procedures are accepted, which are associated with low morbidity and allow a rapid return to normal activity. The morbidity and mortality of the surgical procedures for esophageal cancer has significantly decreased, furthermore several new therapeutic methods (neoadjuvant therapy, endoscopic mucosectomy) have been introduced. However, the esophageal operations are still high-risk procedures; therefore their performance is recommended in well-experienced centers.
