Tartalmi kivonat:The author of the paper discusses the development and the legal system of the western cities in Europe. The author describes the characteristics of the city that explains the concept of the city. He outlines the urban peace and the urban freedom. He translates chapters form the law book of Rymundus Parthenopeis about family law. He elucidates the hierarchical order of the German and Hungarian cities. He gives a picture about provincial towns and towns of landlords. In the Hungarian Kingdom, the group of the royal free cities included the ‘tavernical towns’ (or free royal cities), the ’towns of Chief Justice’, the towns of the Transilvanian Saxons and the ’mining towns’. (The term free royal city does not exist in the Middle Ages, but historians use this term instead of ‘tavernical towns’. Citizens of ‘tavernical towns’ could appeal to the Master of the treasury [Treasurer or Tavernical], citizens of towns of the Chief Justice could appeal to the Chief Justice.) Another group included the towns of landlords, market towns.
