| Tartalmi kivonat: | The aim of this thesis is to examine the characteristics of a frequently occurring notion in contemporary British politics, which is British Euroscepticism. Scepticism towards the European Union is a strengthening political idea, which is usually linked to the high numbers of Eastern European immigrants who ‘flooded’ Britain after the EU enlargement of 2004. The first sections of the paper examine the exact number of EU immigrants, their educational level and their occupations, while these sections also research the effects EU immigrants have on the United Kingdom, and what native British people think about immigrants and the EU. The later sections investigate the gap in public perceptions and the reality of EU immigration by analysing media and political representations of these questions. This paper attempts to prove the issues Britain’s society and economy faces cannot be originated to immigration, and that the British public has misconceptions about this phenomenon, which misinterpretations are rooted in the narratives of political and media discussions. Therefore immigration and the EU cannot be blamed for British Euroscepticism either, because these false ideas of the negative effects of immigration come from the media environment, and not from people’s own experiences. This topic is frequent in the British press, and the whole notion of British Euroscepticism is crucial in today’s British politics. |
