| Tartalmi kivonat: | In this paper, address terms occurring in the 2013 The Great Gatsby movie adaptation are analyzed. The purpose of the paper is to find out what kind of address terms are used in the film, what is the reason they are used, what sort of social factors affect the way people address each other, and what kind of patterns are present in the movie. The results suggest that six types of address terms are used in the movie, such as first name, last name, title plus last name, title, term of endearment and term of insult. In the movie address terms are used for six different reasons, namely, respect, intimacy, mockery, solidarity, power and anger. Two types of social factors determine the characters' choice of address. In the movie, three different dyadic patterns can be found: the reciprocal use of first name, the reciprocal use of title plus last name, and the nonreciprocal use of first name and title. Since the field of sociolinguistics seeks to provide an answer to why people speak differently in different contexts, by studying address terms this question may be answered. |
