Tartalmi kivonat:After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, the Hungarian government took over press affairs, the press department was established at the Prime Minister’s Office, and the juries were set up. The press department considered it an important task to promote the new regime and to curb agitation against the state, certain leaders or offices. To this end, both supportive and retaliatory tools were used. In my study, I examine the forms of the supportive and retaliatory tools in the Vojvodina and in Transylvania in the first years after the Compromise, i.e. before the consolidation of the regime. The study is primarily based on archival sources. First, I deal with the press lawsuits launched or planned against the newspaper Zastava (published in Novi Sad), then I present cases of press subsidies in Transylvania and the Vojvodina, discussing the financial conditions of subsidised newspapers, the reasons for and methods of subsidisation. I conclude by assessing the effectiveness of the press department’s activities in the region.
