Tartalmi kivonat:The international studies in the field of citizenship competence have paid only little attention to the exploration of social and economic dimensions of this competence, and the studies carried out so far have been confined mainly to elementary and secondary school students. Until lately, no research has taken place in Hungary with the aim of uncovering higher education students' opinions and beliefs related to societal and economic phenomena. The main purpose of the present study is to start the investigations in this area and to describe arts students' opinions. 138 arts students, all from the University of Szeged, were included in the sample. The study answers the following questions: (I) What degree of state involvement do students consider justified in different services? (2) How do university students think about issues of their emloyment? (3) To what extent are motives of self-development related to participatory fields of citizenship competence present in students' thinking? The results in general show that (I) students in the sample have similar expectations regarding the role of the state in the provision of services, and the presence of unrealistic demands is insignificant. (2) Uncertainty was found dominant with regard to workplace success and well-paid jobs, but there is a trust in a balanced family life in the future. (3) Subjects found it probable that they would take on different types of jobs in the course of their careers.
