| Tartalmi kivonat: | Mátyás Bél (1684-1749), a polyhistor of the first part of the 18 thcentury designed a work describing the counties of Hungary and giving an overview in the fields of history, geography and natural history. The description of 11 counties did come out in print entitled Notitia Hungariae Novae. The rest, among others the volume on Zemplén County only survived in manuscript, of which, however, there is only one known copy (Zempliniensis Comitatus Descriptio, written between 1732 and 1736, held in the Archiepiscopal Library of Esztergom). Several pieces of the text do yet appear in Antal Szirmay's (1747-1812) Notitia Topographica, Politica, Inclyti Comitatus Zempleniensis (Buda, 1803). Szirmay, however, did not refer to the work he had been using, which, in the present view, would constitute the offence of plagiarism. Yet Antal Szirmay is not to be accused of it. In the conception of the period 200 years ago a take-over of some particles of a former piece was not unquestionably objected to. More than two-thirds (at least 340 of the total 485 pages) of Szirmay's volume is undoubtedly his genuine work. It is true at the same time that if he had referred to his source, he would have obviously acted in a morally more acceptable way. Yet it is also his merit that he made the contemporary public know of many important parts of the lurking manuscript of Bél. |
