| Tartalmi kivonat: | The study commemorates the course of life of one of the richest lords of Transdanubia, Earl György Festetics, on the 200th anniversary of his death, by using the available research data from cultural history and pedagogy. It emphasizes the almost unique endeavor of the patriarchal lord in the Enlightenment period, namely that he supported education, and within that the importance of science. This was combined with his commitment to the Hungarian language and culture, the promotion of Hungarian literature with a peculiar national sentiment. Although his life and opinions about him are not without contradictions, he has demonstrated his exceptional abilities through his forward-looking actions. He made his mark in the wold. He founded schools and established the first agricultural college in Europe, the Georgikon. As a Maecenas he supported the education of young patrician and talented villein children, he supported the literature, and the book printing. He is the Father of the Helicon Celebrations. On the other hand, the author researches the survival of the cultural heritage started by the Earl, it’s impact on the youth of today, on their intellectual and emotional development based on the author’s former personal Helicon experiences, and her current pedagogical practice. The author is searching whether in today's digital world the high school age youth need the presence of arts and culture in everyday life? Does the spiritual, emotional experience and the cultural traditions add a plus to their life? Is there any continuity? How does the city Keszthely preserve the memory and intellectual heritage of the Festetics? In our study we remember the chief lord who lived two hundred years ago. Out of his respectable works, the author focuses on education and culture. |
