Tartalmi kivonat:At the end of the eighteenth century significant economic processes commenced in Hungary. Governmental orders and the beginning of procedures of industrialisation in Hungary resulted in the transformation of traditional agriculture. Due to urbanisation the number of the population living in towns increased continuously. At that time the royal free city of Pécs was the biggest town of South Transdanubia, with the most inhabitants in the region. The number of population augmented constantly, mainly due on one hand to the German and South Slavic ethnicities settling in the area, on the other hand to the rural population moving in town from the agglomeration. It was in the middle of the nineteenth century when the process of economic history began in the frame of which numerous modern investments were realized in Pécs. The industrialists constituted a significant social group in the city, mostly from among the German speaking residents settling at the end of the eighteenth century. From the first half of the nineteenth century an abundance of various forms of craft activities appeared, the number of industries approached 80 already at the beginning of the 1830s. The operation of the established industrial companies transformed the economy and employment structure of the city in the course of only a few decades. It was at this time of history when those manufactures were established whose activities obtained national, and in some cases even international reputation and acknowledgement (Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture, Hamerli Glove Manufacture, Höfler Leather Manufacture, Sopiana Machine Factory, Tobacco Factory). These newly established industrial companies determined the image and the economy of the city of Pécs, still having nowadays, to some extent, an impact on it.
