Tartalmi kivonat: | The first mass can be interpreted as a rite of passage. While it is true that the actual initiation takes place at the ordination, it is together with the first mass that the ordination of a priest acquires its full meaning. At the first mass the community receives the priest and legitimizes his activity, because on the occasion of ordination the priest "only" becomes a member of the church. But we must not forget that before ordination and the first mass there are two other important steps in the life of the novice that lead up to this rite of reception - entry to the seminary and ordination as deacon. Many customs contributing to the pomp of the occasion are associated with the first mass said independently by the newly ordained priest. In many places the ordination of a priest is accompanied by the phenomenon known as the "priest's wedding feast", that can be regarded as a kind of first mass lunch or supper. The sacral part of the first mass - the church ceremony itself, holy mass - and the agapé that follows are related in a special way. The two are completely intertwined and together give the first mass its special character. The "priest's wedding feast" is a symbolical act, a mystical marriage, the wedding feast of a person who will not have a secular wedding feast. However, nowadays in many places the event is held mainly to satisfy people's desire for entertainment. |
