Tartalmi kivonat: | Light is the life-giving symbol of the sun. (Candle)light in Christianity is primarily a symbol of Christ, the Day of Justice and the Light of the World. Smoke conveys the prayers and devotion of the people to the gods above; itis the pictorial expression of the soul's ascension, and in traditional cultures, it is one means of exorcising evil. Today, candles are a favorite property of modem festivities and rituals; they have a secularized, aesthetic function. Magyarfalu (Arini in Romanian) in Moldavia is a bilingual (HungarianRumanian) Roman Catholic village of 1,500 residents. Social and cultural aspects ofthe community are greatly determined by its historical and religious past. In local religious practice, traditional, inherited magical systems are also important. Itis difficult to separate the mediating, guiding and influencing functions of the candle as an object of sacred acts and liturgy (administering sacraments, private religious devotion) and as an instrument of magical acts (magic, counter-charm, divination). Examining the beliefs and notions surrounding the acts and the context in which the candle is used (form, method, time, event) may help us separate these functions. In local religious practice, the candle is used in the following cases: individual magical practices (e. g. warding off fear), individual sacred events (e. g. private devotion), communal physical labor (e. g. "burning bacon"), communal magical acts (e. g. warding off a storm) and communal liturgical events (e. g. requiem). This paper discussesthe sacredfunctions of the candle (the light and the smoke) as well as aspects of its use, both on the level of the individual and that of the community. The candle adds to the totality of the religious experience and the experience of the physically unattainable Supernatural. |
