Tartalmi kivonat: | In the inner districts of Kunszentmárton there have been four crosses for a long time: 1. Veres Cross (1730), 2. Calvary (around 1790), 3. Shepherd Cross (1806) and 4. Kurucz Cross (1826). There are crosses both in front of the lower and the upper cemetery chapel. The crosses mentioned remind of the salvation by God and the death of Jesus on the cross with their presence, fulfilling an important function in the religious practices of the centuries passed. Namely, in three cases: 1. on the night of Thursday before Easter when the folk custom, the so-called "searching for Jesus" took place, 2. on the afternoon of Good Friday when the procession of the religious community visited all the four crosses (this local type custom is "based on old customs", and it was performed already in the 1840s) 3. the begging procession of the cross-visiting days led to the three crosses of the inner districts. During all of the processions, almost without exception, the religious community sang the songs of local song composers. The text of the songs, with an indication of the melody, are to be found in József Ökrös's 1862 manuscript book, and a number of the casual compositions by János Mezey Nepomuk, the cantor of Kunszentmárton, are located in the song book published by him in 1883. |
