Tartalmi kivonat:During the research of murals in the Calvinist church of the village Lónya, a depiction of the Virgin Mary with Robe has been discovered on the northern side of the triumphal arch, which can be considered the earliest example among such historical relics of Hungary. After giving a short outlook on European depictions, I tried to collect murals with similar themes which appeared at the end of the 13th century and at the beginning of the 14lh century in Hungary. Still it was during the 15th century that this depiction really flourished. Besides separate images, there are several frescos in which Mary with Robe is a part of a larger composition of the LastJudgement. In some cases there are female saints standing beside her or angels crowning her. On some frescos, there are small figures grouped according to their genders or positions in social hierarchy taking shelter under the robe. On the murals from the 17th and 18th centuries, there are angels - first only two, later more and more - lifting the widely opened robe. In the 17lh-18lh centuries, the way of depiction changed as the Hungarian Saint Kings appeared under the Blessed Virgin's robe interceding with Virgin Mary for the whole nation. The depiction is present even in contemporary ecclesiastical art. The most monumental example of it is to be found in the Votive Church of Szeged.
