Tartalmi kivonat:In this short study, I examine the effects of the post WWI Treaty of Trianon on the Hungarian banking system. I analyze the long-term impact of border changes on the Hungarian banking network and on urban development in Hungary between the two world wars. Boundary changes have caused a huge loss of assets and equity capital for the banking system, with severed branches and interrupted bank links resulting in years of frozen assets and the accumulation of non-performing loans. It also outlines the factors influencing the territorial reorganization of banking centers in the interwar period not only in the context of consequences of the peace treaty, but also in the context of trends of market concentration, in line with international trends. The combined consequence of border changes and concentration trends is the strengthening of Budapest's dominant role at the expenses of regional banking centers.
