Tartalmi kivonat: | The study examines the folkloric and paraliturgic celebration of the Virgin Mary's Engagement in some villages of Northern Hungary. Visions and rites are also connected to the festival. The festival of Mary's Engagement is characterized by the mystical union of earthly and heavenly worlds. It becomes possible for the participants to approach eternity and get into contact with sacred time. Here the folk model of time and commemoration is revealed, which enables the participants to identify themselves with both Christ's and the Virgin Mary's earthly lives. Culture, spirituality, folk experience of festivals and ordinary days prove that this kind of identification is not so much a commemoration but rather the actualization of Salvation and Biblical times. The presence of saints beyond physical time becomes perceptible. It is as if Salvation - the culmination of world history, integrating cyclic and linear historical views of time - could become a continuous present. |
