Tartalmi kivonat:In this study I examine how the First World War influenced everyday life and reshaped the role of those who remained at home, including women. My analysis is based on the recollections of Mrs Sándor Patakyné Róza Ludovika Welfaui Schwarz, a kindergarten teacher from Óbecse. My paper is thus a case study in which individual lives and through them the local impacts and consequences of major historical events are reflected. Róza Schwarz wrote her recollections in response to an appeal made by the newspaper Uj Magyarságin its issue of 5 June 1938, for which she received a prize. During the First World War the kindergarten teacher took over the management of her husband’s agricultural school and organised the local women. In addition she also performed her duties as a kindergarten teacher and cared for her own four children. The recollection in the form of a diary thus also provides an example of what happened to the traditional role of women during the Great War. As sources I make use of the surviving personal and economic documents of Róza Schwarz and her husband Sándor Pataky, as well as family photographs and the correspondence exchanged by the couple during the First World War that shows how the husband tried to help the kindergarten teacher manage the farm work. The description of the life career gives an insight into the events of the change of rule following the First World War that led to the family’s decision to move to within the new borders of Hungary.
