But his fights during World War I and his captivity in the Siberian prison camp are not, in spite of the fact that this period determinedthe course of his later life. During World War I, he fought on the Italian and Russian front, where he was wounded and taken to Berezovka (East-Siberaia) as a prisoner. During his captivity he got to know the Marxism and he also learnt Russian, German and French. Imre Nagy left the prison camp in January 1918. He joined the Red Guard, and during the fights he alsojoined the „Foreign Workers’ Communist Party of Siberia”.In 1920 he was a member of the newly formed Hungarian Communist Party. At that time he spent most of his time with administrative work for the party. He retuned to Hungary in 1921 as a different person who dedicated his life to the Communist ideal. |
