Lajos Szentmihályi, a Roman Catholic priest who served for more than four decades in the same settlement, Császlóc (now Chaszlivtsi, Subcarpathia, Ukraine), not only tended to his community’s spiritual needs but was also their healer.Even from a distance of half a century, the many references and recollections recorded during the course of fieldwork bear witness to the extensive healing activity carried out by the priest. The paper outlines the historical events that were among the reasons why Father Lajos Szentmihályi – who was later appointed papal chamberlain and titular provost – undertook the role of healing priest in addition to his pastoral vocation, under all circumstances, even in the “difficult times”. It touches on the major events in the life of the settlement and its Catholic parish and the changes there from the earliest times to the present. It examines the circumstances of how the young priest appointed to the village gradually became the community’s spiritual leader, teacher, healer and true father. |
