Tartalmi kivonat:The Battle at the River Inn usually appears in Hungarian historiography as "the first great defeat in the West". It is a fact that in 913 the Bavarians defeated the Hungarians who had been already threatening Europe for over a decade and had reached more distant parts of the continent after their great victory in the Battle of Pressburg, 907. In my study, I present firstly the main character of the Bavarians in this armed conflict, Amulf, Duke of Bavaria (nicknamed the Bad or the Evil) who is a slightly neglected historical figure, not only in Hungarian, but in international historiography as well. Secondly I give an overview of the background of the battle by describing the Hungarian-Bavarian relations in the first half of 10th century. Furthermore, I analyze the battle both from military and political points of view with the help of relevant Hungarian and international works. In addition to this analysis, I try to reconstruct the events by using the written sources with a critical approach, as an important methodological principle. Some practical aspects are also parts of the analysis which can contribute to the better understanding of the motives of Hungarian raids and to the refirmulation of some previous statements about the first decades of the Hungarian presence in the Carpathian Basin.
