Tartalmi kivonat: | Military challenges against the political formations of Medieval Europe from the 8th century A.D, namely the attacks of the Normans, the Muslims (including Arabs and Berbers) and the Hungarians can be evaluated from many perspectives. The tactical military using of light cavalry and later appearance of it in the conquered areas of the continent (Iberian Peninsula and Carpathian Basin) gives us one avenue of analysis. The historical literature often considers the Islamic West (Maghreb) as a separated area, where different - first of all local - influences existed, from the Eastern part of the Muslim World. There, the most important influences were generated by the Mediterranean, Byzanthian or Western-European neighbours, and the Berber influence was also continous in the Iberian Muslim warfare. Within these cultural influences we can see only some traces of military tactical elements of Steppe origin that were of critical importance during the Muslim wars in Asia and against Byzantium. But the using of light cavalry seems as important as always was in the medieval military history of the Carpathian Basin. This study compares the military history of the Carpathian Basin with that of the Iberian Peninsula to identify common elements of light cavalry warfare that are from Steppe origin or from other sources in the areas, e.g. of the role of the horse, styles of horseback riding, the use of mounted archers and the using of light cavalry tactics. |
