Tartalmi kivonat: | The aim of this essay is to present the territorial connections in the personnel of the cathedral chapter of Csanád between 1354 and 1526. Territorial links played an important role in filling the vacancies. Clerics from Csanád, from the estates belonging to the cathedral chapter or to the bishop, or even from the neighbourhood of these estates had a great chance to get a benefice. First we had to reconstruct and map the estates belonging to the cathedral chapter or to the bishop of Csanád. Then we compared the place-names with the given names according to place of origine of the members of the chapter. As a result of territorial links 50 people, that is 49 per cent of the 102 analysed cases, became the member of the cathedral chapter in this way. 39 clergymen of them (38 per cent) got into the chapter simply by territorial connection. In regard to the family and social background of the prebends who got their stallum in this way, we have the following results: we found 5 villeins from the estates belonging to the chapter or to the bishop, 2 nobles from families holding estates together with the chapter, 6 people of noble origin, 23 town-dwellers (mainly market town burghers) and 7 villeins from the neighbourhood of the estates belonging to the chapter or to the bishop. There were 2 or 3 residents from Csanád and 5 people of pending origin as well. Comparing our results with Western Hungarian chapters (as of Buda, Fehérvár, Győr, Pécs, Pozsony) we have found that this way of getting benefice was more significant in Csanád, probably because of Csanád's peripheral character. |
