Identity – the self-consciousness – is not an in-born characteristic but it is a component of our personality that is forming during the socialization. Beside the approach of developmental psychology it is worth examining other theories in connection with the self-image, too. On the basis of the idea of James the selfimage of the personality can acquire some experiences about itself in two ways of operation: on the basis of the cognitive and recognized ego. The first one enables the examination of the personality directly: it observes, analyses, examines itself during activity, while it is acting, thinking and feeling in a situation. The recognized ego means the pieces of information received from other people or rather the synthesis what others are saying and the personality accepts about itself on the basis of a self-analysis. The pieces of information that one can acquire this way have a role on four levels: in respect of the body, society, material and spirit. The self-image regarding these fields can be formulated by describing, assessing and emotional categories. Mead connects the development of the self-image with the social roles. We can acquire some pieces of information in connection with the questions that were put earlier if the personality examines its behaviour in different social roles. How much and what is typical for all of our roles that can be observed in our behaviour, our performance of a role. On the basis of his theory the self-image originates from the reactive/spontaneous ego and the normative one that is built up. According to the idea of Rogers the sense of identity is the combination of the self-image (current picture) and the ego-ideal (the desired ego that I imagine). In his opinion the bigger is the difference between them the less is the possibility to reach the identity. If the distance between them is relatively small but still exists, we are in a „promising” situation and a balanced, mature personality must be developing. At this time the personality is able to set the direction of the changes and there is a chance to alter. If both the above mentioned meet each other, it means: the personality is of the kind it wants to be, there is no reason any more to develop. The earlier the person arrives at this stage the less possible is the development of its personality.
