| Tartalmi kivonat: | Elisabeth Szilágyi of Horogszeg was the renowned dowager of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 15th century. She is considered to be one of the most famous women in the history of Hungary. Still, her life, apart from certain periods, is mostly unknown in front of the widespread public. During the 19th and 20th century, in the Hungarian historiography Elisabeth was portrayed as a less important, subsidiary character, and no one has written a biographical monograph about her based on historical documents to this day. However, in the year 2018 we celebrate the 560th anniversary of the election of King Matthias I of Hungary. This provides us an opportunity to commemorate about those, who had helped him ascending the throne of Hungary. The historical books have emphasized only Elisabeth’s role in the election of her son, paying less attention to the subsequent chapters of her story. This study presents Elisabeth’s life between 1458 and 1464, from the election to the coronation of king Matthias Corvinus I. This work investigates the political activity performed by the noble widow in these years in order to help her son stabilizing his power. In addition, it examines Elisabeth’s high-ranking title as "queen mother"; her special dignity deriving from the fact that she was the mother of the king. |
