Tartalmi kivonat:Mihály Fazekas’ well-known writing titled “Lúdas Matyi” (Mattie the Goose-boy) is one of the most determining and popular works of the Hungarian Enlightenment up to this day. The epic poem has a great tradition: it spread quickly not only in its own era from theatrical adaptations to trash literature, but also became organic part of the Hungarian pop culture with the help of movies and cartoons. In the meantime the interpretational spectrum of “Lúdas Matyi” has transformed and changed. Nowadays we tend to find the message of the work in the wise and tricky peasant boy’s victory over the tyrannous and evil lord of Döbrög, although in the age of Fazekas readers might have interpreted it differently. For that very reason, nowadays recent literateurs have read “Lúdas Matyi” again and highlighted the leaks and defects of traditional interpretation. Szilágyi (2002) states that Matyi is unequivocally not a folk-hero, meanwhile Döbrögi seems to be the real centre and hero of the story. Besides this, Mészáros (2007) suggests that the work, contradicting to the title, can be read as the story of Döbrögi. The paradox of the title leads us to the conclusion that the hero’s name in the title could be read as a telling name. The aim of my study is to present a modern way of interpretation in this new context, as well as to find the possible functions of the telling name in the 19th century. To corroborate my hypothesis I am using the contemporary documents witnessing the reception of Fazekas’s age, furthermore I am searching for lingual proofs in the history of word ‘ludas’, too. At the end of the study, according to the proofs above, I am pointing out further possibilities of interpretation, therefore expanding again the spectrum of “Lúdas Matyi”.
