Tartalmi kivonat:Information about institutions of the German tribes is available in the works of ancient authors. For the first time in history, Caesar wrote about the Germans in detail. The next author was Tacitus 150 years later. My interest is focused on the institutions, the assembly (which played an important role during the latter centuries as well), jurisdiction and warfare of German tribes based on the works of the abovementioned authors. Taking recent archaeological results into consideration, the development of tribal armament and the role of donation in political relations is discussed. The detailed research of Roman silver tableware usually donated to German leaders, describing their trade using the achievements of linguistics, is one of my main concerns. Significant changes occurred in the lifestyle of German tribes during the period between Caesar and Tacitus, mainly due to the Roman impact.
