Tartalmi kivonat: | Zemplén County was a unique one in the 19th century in Hungary with its elongated shape, "here lowlands, hills, and mountains met, and several different nations, e. g. Hungarians, Slovaks, Ruthenians, Jews and Germans lived together. Owing to its shape Zemplén County lacked reál regional centres, instead of this a relatively small county seat and several district centres dominated fte territory o f the region. The original data sheets ofthe census in 1869 front Zemplén County are available in the archivál matériái (which is an unique case compared to other areas in the country). The census o f 1869 'vas the first one ordered by the Hungárián govemment, however it was organised and carried out hy the local authorities. This study fills a niche in the field o f historical geography and demography owing to both its toPic and method. Our goal was to investigate the distribution ofthe inhabitants of a local administrative centre, Varannó town, based on their occupation and birth places. Results were illustrated on a map. 53.50/ ’ 0f the totai population ofthe town was bőm in other settlements, this ratio was equal 'vith that ofth e county seat, Sátoraljaújhely, and was far higher compared to other districts centres o f Zemplén. 37.56% ofth e’population (765 people) had somé kind ofnotice on the census sheets ab»ut their occupation, with 98 different jobs, fforn which 14 was dominated by indigenous (local) People. Varannó received immigrants from all settlements írom its own administrative district, so it was a real functioning local centre for its surroundings. |
