Tartalmi kivonat:The research infrastructure of Westerns Balkan Countries has faced challenges; the agro-food sector is characterised by reputed researches represented in higher education institutions and research institutions especially in regions with developed agriculture. Although the innovation processes and its impact on economy have been criticised by many authors (Svarc, 2001; Bilas, 2008). In the focus of the current study - as part of a wider research on the Croatian-Hungarian agro-food sector's joint innovation capacities - the Croatian counties with traditional agricultural production stand. In the course of the analysis of enterprises of three counties of Croatia near the Hungarian border showed that different capacities of research-development and innovation characterise Virovitica-Podravina, Koprivnica-Krizevci and Osijek-Baranjska counties in aspect of the development of cooperations with higher education institutions. Not only the regional structure of the main business activities (NACE2) varies, but the available researchers and size capacities also influence the RDI profile of the counties analysed. The authors examined the sorts of innovation activities and its proportion in aspect of the above factors, where it was found that other (such as the type of main activity, NACE2) has greater impact on the variables.
