Tartalmi kivonat: | This paper analyses the eff ects of macro-historical processes on individual life and it is based ona particular group of sources, the photographs. Th e examination of the life of a merchant from Hódmezővásárhely (B. L.) involvedpictures selected from the family photo-collection that werespecifi cally related to B. L. However, the compact nature of photographs necessitated the completion of their contents with information from explanatory narration.Th e background information was provided, in this case, not by the memories of B. L., but those of his descendants. Th us, the limits of a family’s collective memory connected to a certain person could be determined as well.Th e visual-anthropological analysis comprisedof 43 photographs related to the most important landmarks of individual life, like transitional rites, and some of them showed details of everyday life.Th e interpretation of the photographs’ deep content also revealed the values and social norms that characterised the person and his age. In course of the research, the Second World War was marked as the most signifi cant historical event infl uencing the individual’s life, but in the background of the pictures other turning points of the 20th century could be detected, despite the fact that these events were preserved only verbally and not visuallyin the family recollection. |
