Tartalmi kivonat: | The study deals with the military activity of Ádám II. Batthyány (1662–1703), the son of Kristóf Batthyány, during the first part of the great war (1683–1699) between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empire in Hungary. At first, the young Ádám Batthyány at the age of 21 acted as the substitute of his ill father, he tried to gather troops against the Ottomans. The Ottoman campaign of 1683 crushed the weak resistance in Hungary and grand vizier Kara Mustafa attacked and laid siege to Vienna, the centre of the Habsburg Empire in 1683. The Hungarian high nobility, including Kristóf Batthyány surrendered to the seemingly victorious Ottomans. After the defeat of the Ottomans at Vienna, Kristóf Batthyány fell out of grace with the Habsburg ruler, Leopold I. and his military positions (the military leadership of the border fortresses opposite to Kanizsa and the military leadership of the Transdanubian district) were given to his very young son, Ádám II Batthyány. The ambitious and quite stubborn young Hungarian baron participated with about 1500-2000 soldiers in the campaigns between 1684–1690, successfully fought in battles, and in sieges (at Buda in 1686) blockades of fortresses (e. g. Kanizsa, 1588-1590). At the same time, he had to defend the region under his supervision. He aspired to getting high military positions (vice-marshal), which he finally got in 1691. |
