Tartalmi kivonat:The study seeks to find out if the Jesuit Academy (universitas) established by István Báthory, King of Poland and Prince of Transylvania in 1581 in Kolozsvár (present-day Cluj-Napoca, Romania) can be regarded as a cultural predecessor of the present University of Szeged. The author - together with the historical background of Hungarian and world universities - describes the long and eventful road, wich led from the establishment in 1581 to the re-establishment of Kolozsvár University in 1872, then its movement to Szeged in 1921, as well as its bifurcation in 1940, wich set the foundations of modern Szeged University. The author's conclusion is that Szeged University arguably declared itself to the mental and cultural inheritor of the universitas founded by Báthory; therefore the university is justified to lead back its roots to 1581.
