| Tartalmi kivonat: | On October 16, 1962, the CIA presented some aerial photographs to the President of the United States of America John F. Kennedy, which proved that the Soviet Union was about to establish Intercontinental Ballistic Missile sites in Cuba, ninety miles away from the shores of the United States. The Kennedy administration regarded those missiles as offensive weapons, as dangers for national security, and decided to force them out of Cuba by establishing a naval quarantine around the island. This naval quarantine caused a crisis, a serious confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, because Soviet ships and submarines were already on their way to Cuba. The interception and boarding of those ships would have led to a nuclear war. The world stood on the edge of destruction. Finally, just a few hours before the previously planned invasion of Cuba by the United States, which also would have caused war, the Soviet Chairman Nikita S. Khrushchev agreed to return the missiles back to the Soviet Union. The Cuban missile crisis was over. In this work my aim was to prove the resbonsibility of the United States, for creating such a perilous situation. |
