After the death of Queen Elisabeth, it was mandated by law to have a public memorial built for her in Budapest. After a long period of planning, the statue was built only in 1932. In the 1930s the cult of Queen Elisabeth reinvigorated, but the memorial fit in with the Habsburg cult of the Horty era...
