In the 1930s the cult of Queen Elisabeth reinvigorated, but the memorial fit in with the Habsburg cult of the Horty era as well. The statue survived the surge of vandalism against statues in 1945, and also the first wave of statue removals after 1948. It was removed only in 1954, and it was placed in a museum warehouse. The latent survival of the queen’s cult is demonstrated by the fact that the capital planned the reerection of the statue as early as 196, just like the previously stolen statue in Gödöllő was displayed again in 1964. In the 1980s interest in Queen Elisabeth renewed, and the academic examination of her real historical role began. The memorial was displayed again in public in 1986, and in the following years several new or previously stolen statues of the Queen were erected. | |
