Having clarified Foucault's notion of the biopower, some of the characteristics of modern institutions of confinement and mental institutions are examined. Subsequently, drawing on the volume entitled "Reports from the Pit", the inpatient mental health facility as a cruel biopower (disciplinary) institution will be discussed, with parallels to concentration camps and inhuman disciplinary institutions aimed at maintaining “peace and civilised order”. | |
