| Tartalmi kivonat: | The 4th canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno in the Hungarian versions by Ferenc Császár, Károly Szász and Mihály Babits The main purpose of this article is to analyse the most relevant verses of 4th canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno in the Hungarian versions by Ferenc Császár (1857), Károly Szász (1885) and Mihály Babits (1913). Even though the translations into Hungarian of Dante’s masterpiece were published significantly later compared to those in English and French, this essay aims to emphasize how impressive the evolution of Hungarian language has been, both stylistically and conceptually, in just half a century. Moreover, taking into account the huge role played by the translators in the movement for the renewal of the language (nyelvújítás) and considering the strong asymmetries between the Italian and the Hungarian, this comparative analysis allows for a rediscovery of the greatness of Dante's poetry. |
