They document the way in which the Hungarian state power subdued and controlled the whole of society in the Rákosi and Kádár eras. The various data found in the investigative materials also contain information that help uncover the social history of the period, because a great number of facts about everyday life can be found in them — as illustrated by the case of the doctor cited in the paper. The informers' reports that discuss private life situations retrieve themes covered in friendly conversations including such that range from problems of private life to diverse topical political issues. In examining surveillance documents on is to consider the fact that these texts went through a multiple filter before being recorded from memory. The informers merely recollect the conversations in their reports, and the resumes and further plans are made on the basis of this. Therefore, what the person under surveillance actually had to say, his/her intention or the original context can by no means be accurately reconstructed. Yet the texts contain a great deal of valuable information. One can, for instance, perceive the changes that were going to take place after the 1950s, when people under surveillance and perhaps some of the informers as well, using various strategies tried to survive in a situation that they looked upon as a temporary one. From the 1960s and more typically, from the 1970s, the political police strove to justify its existence by keeping up surveillance cases that sometimes were of marginal significance.
