Attitűdkutatások a népi nyelvészet keretein belül

One of the main aims of language attitude research is to investigate myths and misbeliefs of nonlinguists concerning language (Niedzielski and Preston 2000). One of such myths is, for example, that speakers who do not speak a standard variety that has been constructed by a given speech community are considered to be unintelligent and uneducated. What is more, these speakers are only evaluated as such on the basis of their pronunciation which differs from the standard or from the norm that is expected by the majority standard speakers (Preston 1989). The general aim of this paper is to provide a folk linguistics framework to some data collected outside the Anglo-Saxon applied linguistics research traditions. In particular, the paper presents some folk linguistic attitude data collected on Hungarian university students' attitudes towards different English accent varieties. In fact, the findings demonstrate what folk linguistic beliefs exist among Hungarian non-linguists concerning not only various English accent varieties but concerning also the respondents' native language, i.e. Hungarian varieties.
