In our study we present the changes in the composition of the economic elite through half a century and the groups of this class which significantly influenced the city’s administration. We used multipositional approach to distinguish four major groups in our database. The Pécs related aristocracy and nobility played significant role in the life of the city. Due to the economic development more and more plant owners, wholesalers, bankers and managers of the coal mines of the First-Danube-Steamboat-Shipping Company became part of the elite. The third group consisted of lawyers, city administrators and state bureaucrats. The fourth group was made of Church leaders possessing vast amounts of lands; therefore, rather wealthy they were. We used tax assessment lists, archive sources, literature, presssources, statistical statements, estate inventories of deceased etc…As a result of our examinations we can state that the quick economic development modified the composition of the elite; however, the traditional social classes’ positions remained strong in the life of the city.
