First, by empirical methods such as the creation of high-resolution morphological maps or the measurement of form density and specific width along cross-sections. These methods combined with GIS-analysis led to the use of digital elevation models (DEMs) in karren form studies. Denudation scenarios of a rinnenkarren covered bare rock surface are discussed below as an example. Secondly, there is a logically reversed way of modelling karren forms. Theoretical models aim at explaining the karst denudation based on physical and chemical laws and geometrical considerations. Analytical solutions are useful mainly in estimating denudation rates. However, computer simulations are more flexible in modelling the shape or planform of different karren types. Simulated limestone pavement and grooves are presented below as an illustration.
