Régészeti adatok a 14-15. század temetkezési rítusához
Burial rite around churches has a long history in Hungary. The laws of (Saint) Ladislaus I (1077–1095) and Coloman (1095–1116) obliged the Hungarians converted to Christian faith to maintain it, and this practice was in effect for nearly 700 years, until the rule of Mary Theresa (1740–1780). The laws of (Saint) Ladislaus I (1077–1095) and Coloman (1095–1116) obliged the Hungarians converted to Christian faith to maintain it, and this practice was in effect for nearly 700 years, until the rule of Mary Theresa (1740–1780). In connection with this burial rite around churches, medieval archaeology primarily brought to the fore, changes happening in the Árpád Age and the burial customs of the subsequent period(s) remained in the background, laying emphasis on building archaeology and protection of monuments. For this reason, in this study, the author makes an attempt to show less researched burial rites in the 14th–15th century with the assistance of archaeological scholarship. The description of the burial rituals in the 14th–15th century provides the main line. Based on the research, among others, it can be claimed that the depth of the graves is not a characteristic phenomenon at that time, and the graves are mostly W–E oriented and/or follow the direction of the churches. Signs on the graves are not known from this period; according to certain sources, the presence of wooden crosses is presumable in cemeteries. The use of coffins proliferated in the 14th–15th century in bigger number but there are precedents for putting the corpses into bulrush. As for superstitious customs, the burning out of graves and putting mortuary obulus spread in wide range. Examples for the other relating phenomena can be found in rare cases. Regarding burial rite, the role of costumes increased and burying in decorated clothes became general. Jewellery was neglected among Hungarians, wearing them was rather preferred by foreign ethnicities. Instead of jewellery, the adorning of clothing and its most important parts – the párta and the párta-belt, which could have been made of multiple materials and patterns, – came the fore. | |
