Th e paper studies the French reception of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and discusses theoretical works on 1956 written by the cream of the French intelligentsia, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Claude Lefort and Raymond Aron etc. Th e events of 1956 comprise an important segment of the life’s work of these authors, out of which a number of pieces on totalitarianism have been produced. An analysis of the reasons for the Revolution as well as the course and experience of it signifi cantly contributed to an uncovering of the true nature of Stalinism and to an academic description of the essence of totalitarianism along with its mechanisms of operation.
