The morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit; a word may be composed of one - so called "free" - morpheme, or more morphemes of different kinds. The characterization of morphemes includes the description of their abilities for linking: which group exists as a member of the lexicon, and which occurs only in special syntactic conditions, as a part of the sentence, - or probably more parts of the sentence. A further problem is to define what a "word" is. Different approaches may yield different definitions. A phonological defintion may not be the same as a syntactic, lexicological or plain morphological definition and all may differ from the general idea of "word" existing in the minds of people. The author thinks that the most fruitful procedure is to examine the mobility of the phonological: "one word" is a phonological string which can be moved as a unit in the sentence according to the speakers communicative intentions.
