The special literature on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and most projects determine social responsibility standards for SMEs based on the best practices of large companies. Thus they take the CSR activity of large companies as a benchmark for SMEs. This happens despite the fact that SMEs are structurally different from large companies to a high extent – and thus so is their potential regarding social responsibility. In our study we analyze these differences and the way they influence SMEs’ social responsibilities. Based on our literature review and the results of our qualitative results we conclude that the structural differences of SMEs from large companies should be considered in the relating empirical work and the social role and responsibilities of SMEs can be understood in the light of social capital theory. | |
